I’m sure we’ve all experienced sickness after being go-go-go, having a late flight that you couldn’t fall asleep on, or being so busy with work that you didn’t get a decent amount of sleep. Not getting enough sleep can directly impact your immune system. When you get enough sleep, your body can create cytokines that target inflammation and infection and get your immune system activated.
Sleep also impacts other aspects of your health. Having a consistent sleep schedule and turning off devices and distractions can help you fall asleep faster. As a society, we tend to have too much screen time. Turning off your devices a couple of hours before you plan to go to sleep can help trigger your brain that it is time for rest.
Lower your stress!
Stress is a tricky aspect of health. It isn’t something you easily see, but it can have huge impacts on how your body copes. It is exhausting for your body to be in fight or flight mode constantly. Too much stimulus can overwhelm and weaken the immune system. Everyone deals with stress differently. The key is to find something that works for you. Many people find meditation and yoga helpful, but that might not be for everyone. Start with things you are knowing are causing you stress and evaluate them. Are they things you absolutely have to do? Is it an activity you should limit from your life? Start saying “no” to more requests than just saying yes to everything and overwhelming yourself. Maybe plan a relaxing bath a couple of nights a week. Just make sure you keep yourself and your stress levels a high-priority. They can get out of balance fast.
